Remember our motto:
WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY, that’s the issue.
And to put our beliefs
ahead of the Scriptures is to really call into question the Word of God
and make God out to be a liar.
Some
of the purposes of the Law.
Romans:3:19"Now
we know that what ever the law says, it says to those who are under law,
so that every mouth may be silent and the whole world held accountable
to GOD."
(The Whole world is
held accountable by the Law)
Romans 3:20
" therefore NO ONE will be declared righteous in his sight by
observing the law, rather, through the Law we become conscious of
sin.
The law stops the
mouth. No one is left justified. The law shows our shortcomings.
Romans 7:7
" what shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would
not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would
not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said" do not
covet."
(The law gives us
a measuring rod to show us the depth of our transgressions).
Illustration
The whole world is
held accountable to God by the law?
Man tries to justify
himself "I've lived a good life, I'm not an axe murderer". If man starts
to look horizontally, meaning: looking at other men for his own elevation
of righteousness, that is easy to do, and easily justifiable. However
if man looks to God's standard then man falls short of God's standard.
Someone may say, "look
at that sheep "it looks so White against the green pastures, but then
it begins to Snow and the person now says, "look that same sheep "it looks
so dirty against the white snow. Same sheep! But it’s a different standard
of judgement.
My life compared to
Adolph Hitler I am very righteous but my life compared to Jesus Christ’s
and God's standard I’m nothing but filthy rags.
Romans 3:24
"so the law was put in charge TO LEAD US to Christ
THAT we might be justified by faith".
The law is a schoolmaster
that brings us to Christ.
The law DOESN"T
JUSTIFY us, it leaves us HOPELESS. Meaning, it shows us
the depth of our transgressions.
1 Timothy 1:8
"we know that the Law is GOOD if one USES it PROPERLY. We also know
that law is made NOT FOR the RIGHTEOUS but for law
breakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious,
for those who kill fathers and mothers, for murderers, for adulters and
perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers and whatever else
is contrary to the sound doctrine that conforms to the glorious GOSPEL
of the blessed God which he entrusted to me.
The law is made for
sinners! It is a schoolmaster by which we see our sinful state and
point to or brings us to Christ! It is used for any thing that does not
conform to the sound doctrine of THE GOSPEL, or anything OUTSIDE the saving
grace of THE GOSPEL is subject to the Law. Because only "IN Christ"
is it set aside.
1 Corinthian 1:18
"for the message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing,
but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. "
The preaching of the
Cross to them that perish is foolishness (they need to see their hopelessness
before grace can abound).
Let's go through the
Law and see how it leaves man helpless.
WHO TRUELY KEEPS THE
LAW?
Which one of us loves
God and has no other god’s of material things, position etc
Which one of us doesn't
have Idols .The Idol, of money position clothes cars etc.
Which one of us has
not used the Lord's name in vain? If we haven't done it for years, time
doesn't console God! If the righteousness of men can extradite a man for
war crimes 35 years after the event, how much more a just and righteous
God call for an account of every idle word.
Which one of us keeps
a day holy? How can unregenerate man keep a day Holy?
Which one of us honors
our Mother & Father? Ever broken that? Your Guilty!
Which one of us has
not murdered?
Which one of us has
not committed adultery.
Which one of us has
never stolen? (a pen will do)
Which one of us has
never lied about someone? (A white one will do)
Which one of us has
never coveted an asset of someone else?
You only need to break
just the smallest one of these and you are under the curse of the Law.
We are ALL left GUILTY,
In need of a saviour to pay the debt, it’s beyond our means.
On presenting the
law people know what they are repenting from, the depth of their sin not
according to their own standard but to God. (Remember the White sheep
story.)
It leads us to Christ.
The law leaves us with a decision.
We can choose to be
slaves to our own flesh nature- or- Being bought with a price and become
servants of Christ, becoming a living sacrifice to Christ
Galatians 3:24
" so the Law was put in charge to LEAD US to Christ that
we might be justified by faith .Now that faith has come, we are NO
LONGER under the supervision of the law. "
Romans 8:4
"and so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteousness
requirements of the law might be fully met IN us, who do not live according
to the sinful nature but according to the SPIRIT".
Notice that the
Scripture says the righteousness REQUIREMENTS of the law IS
"FULLY MET" "IN" us –NOT-
"BY" us.
For it is CHRIST
IN US the hope of glory!
For us to TRY to
FULFILL the law in our OWN FLESH not only undermines the work of the
Cross, but it puts us under the curse of the law, and also makes Salvation
a matter of works which NO LONGER makes Salvation a GIFT from God.
Therefore to those
who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ for their Salvation from the judgment
of the law ie death (sin) it can be truly said ....
Romans 10:4"CHRIST
IS THE END OF THE LAW SO THAT THERE MAY BE RIGHTEOUSNESS FOREVERONE THAT
BELIEVES"
Romans 3:4
"the Law was put in charge to LEAD us to Christ"
Psalm 19:7
" The Law is perfect in CONVERTING the soul".
The law is God’s tool
to CONVERT man "the mirror of our state without HIM.
HERE IS THE KEY: the
Law is for CONVERTING, Not for the CONVERTED!
Romans 8:4 NOW
that I am "IN" Christ the requirement of the Law is "FULLY"(not
partly) met in us.
What could be clearer
than that?
GAL5:18 "If
you are led by the Spirit you are not under the Law."
The unsaved are not
LED by the Holy Spirit and are under the Law. (Need converting)
But we ARE led by
the Spirit and are not under the Law.
Galatians 3:24
Therefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, that we
might be justified by faith. 3:25 But after faith has come, we are no
longer under a schoolmaster.
So the Law is the
head teacher that brings us to Christ. Christ qualified us (for us), now
that we are qualified (righteous requirement of the law is fulfilled in
us [through Christ]) we no long need to be under the Schoolmaster for
we have qualified by accreditation IN Christ.
Does that mean I can
go and murder steal etc….NO!, NO!
Paul says in Galatians
5:13 "do not use you freedom IN Christ as an opportunity for
the flesh".
For I am led by the
Spirit, we enter that relationship by faith (and the fruit of the Spirit
is LOVE) therefor obedience to the Holy Spirit![Gal 5:22-26]
1 Corinthians 6:11-20
Summary: So have we have been set apart, we are not our own, destined
for God exclusively.
And we are justified
by the Spirit of God we are now declared innocent of all charges before
God. Sanctified.
Everything is permissible,
however with this foundation, that, we are set apart to serve God we are
living sacrifices, not crawling off the altar. We are set apart for his
use.
The law was to bring
us to Christ.
If you have not yet
come to Christ the Law will judge you.
If the Spirit leads
you all things are lawful, we are now held by a higher standard, the
law of Christ.
Run in such a way
as to win the prize.
Partake in nothing
that would hinder you or discount you from the prize.
Do not let your freedom
in Christ as an opportunity for the flesh.
All things are permissible
but Paul would not put himself under the power of any.
People should not
exercise there liberty and put themselves under bondage e.g. lust, cigarettes,
anything really.
Thus Paul says he
will not mastered by anything.
Christ is in us; we
are his ambassador’s do we unite Christ with a prostitute .No way!
It’s not our body
anymore we have been redeemed, bought with a price, we have no rights
of our own only the will of God that we might live unto him by the power
of the Spirit. AMEN!
That we might walk
in the Spirit that we might live in the Spirit.
That is our reasonable
service.
For such things there
is no law, for it is obedience to the Spirit.
And if we walk in
the Spirit we die to self, which is our reasonable service, we present
ourselves as living sacrifices to God. Running the race in such a way
as to win the prize.
The Law is NOT done
away with it has SIMPLY done its job of CONVERTING the soul
And I AM NO LONGER
SUBJECT TO IT (IN Christ, Being Fully met in me Though HIM).
That is how in Matt
5:17-20…. No one smallest letter or stroke of the pen will disappear from
the law and the prophets UNTIL everything is accomplished…&….unless
your Righteousness SURPASSES that of the Pharisees AND THE TEACHERS OF
THE LAW…..You will not enter the kingdom of heaven".
The law hasn’t
disappeared, we as "CHRISTIANS" being led by the Spirit
we are just not under it anymore, "in Christ
it is set aside" the righteous requirement of the law is FULLY met
IN us now that we are clothed in HIS righteousness.
Thus the answer to
the question of the law not passing (and our righteousness SURPASSING
that of the PHARISES and the teachers of the Law). Note that that is an
extremely high standard for they were zealous for the law. If people tried
to keep that today they would all probably fail. BUT "IN CHRIST"
WE HAVE HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS. (Or clothed in his righteousness) And that
not of our selves so that no man can boast!
It is the purpose
of the Law that no flesh will be justified BUT THROUGH THE LAW COMES THE
KNOWLEDGE OF SIN.THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW THEN IS TO SHOW US OUR NEED OF
THE GOSPEL AND THE SAVING GRACE THAT JESUS CHRIST GIVES.
For a Christian
to say "I’m a Commandment keeper, I keep all 10 Commandments, why
do you only keep 9" is to apply a purpose to the law for which it
was not designed. The law has then become a standard of Religious Righteousness.
In fact one has probably just sinned in that one is prideful or boastful
in their standard of righteousness.
However the Scripture
is clear:
Romans 3:20
" therefore NO ONE will be declared righteous in his sight by
observing the law, rather, through the Law we become
conscious of sin.
1 Timothy 1:8
"the law is NOT for the righteous but for the unholy.."
Furthermore that person
is looking to the Old Covenant [Moses] rather than Christ we are not under
that Covenant anymore. [message 3, based on the 2 Corinthians 3]
